Metal roofing uses steel panels instead of shingles. Standing-seam metal hides its fasteners under raised seams; exposed-fastener metal is screwed through the panel face. Both work on low- and high-slope roofs for homes, shops, barns and patios. Tusk Roofing installs both types across the Oklahoma City metro.

Standing seam vs. exposed fastener
Standing-seam panels lock together at raised seams, and the clips that hold them down are hidden underneath. That gives a clean look and keeps fasteners out of the weather. Exposed-fastener panels are screwed through the face with sealing washers. They're simpler to install and common on shops, barns and outbuildings; the washers need periodic checks as they age.

Low slope vs. high slope
Metal can work on gentler slopes than shingles can, which makes it useful for porches, patios and additions. Panel type matters here: standing-seam profiles are generally better suited to low slopes because the seams sit above the water line. On steeper residential roofs, either type can work depending on the look you want.
Noise and hail, stated plainly
With solid decking and underlayment beneath it, a metal roof on a home is usually not as loud in the rain as people expect. Metal resists hail differently than shingles: large hail can dent panels, which may be cosmetic or may affect performance depending on severity. We'll talk through what that means for your house before you choose.

Questions
Metal Roofing FAQ
What's the difference between standing seam and exposed fastener?
Standing seam hides its fasteners under raised seams; exposed fastener is screwed through the face of the panel. Standing seam has a cleaner look; exposed fastener is common on shops and barns.
Can metal go on a low-slope porch or patio?
Often, yes. Metal works on lower slopes than shingles. Standing-seam profiles are generally preferred for low slopes.
Is a metal roof loud in the rain?
On a home with solid decking and underlayment, it's usually quieter than people expect. Open-frame buildings like barns are louder.
Does hail dent metal roofs?
Large hail can dent metal panels. Whether a dent is cosmetic or affects performance depends on its size and location.
Can you do metal on a shop or barn?
Yes. We install metal on homes, shops, barns and patio covers.
