White TPO membrane on a low-slope roof with welded seams and a drain

Flat & Low-Slope Roofing (TPO)

Flat & Low-Slope Roofing (TPO) in Oklahoma City

Flat and low-slope roofs need a continuous membrane instead of shingles, because water drains slowly and can sit on the surface. TPO is a single-ply membrane whose seams are heat-welded together. Tusk Roofing installs TPO on porches, additions and commercial-style roof sections across the Oklahoma City metro.

Why shingles don't work on flat roofs

Shingles depend on gravity: each row overlaps the one below and water runs off. On a flat or very low slope, water moves slowly or pools, and it can back up under overlapping shingles. A membrane like TPO covers the area in wide sheets so there's no overlap for water to get under.

Seams

TPO sheets are joined by heat-welding the overlap, which fuses the membrane into one piece. Seams, edges and penetrations like vents and drains are where flat roofs typically fail, so that's where the detail work goes.

Drainage and ponding

"Flat" roofs still need a slight slope toward drains, scuppers or gutters. When water sits on a roof long after rain stops, that's ponding, and it stresses the membrane and the structure. We look at how your roof drains and address low spots as part of the job.

“found our matching shingles”

We are currently doing a 600sqft addition to our 80 year old home. Tusk was able to reconstruct our roof to make it seamless to the new addition. They also went above and beyond and found our matching shingles that were discontinued so we did not have to redo the entire roof. We are very happy with how our roof turned out.

Questions

Flat & Low-Slope Roofing (TPO) FAQ

What is TPO roofing?

TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply roofing membrane used on flat and low-slope roofs. Its seams are heat-welded to form a continuous surface.

Can I put shingles on my porch roof?

Only if the slope is steep enough for shingles. Many porches and additions are too flat, and a membrane like TPO is the right choice.

What is ponding?

Ponding is water that sits on a flat roof after rain instead of draining. It stresses the membrane and the structure, and it usually points to low spots or blocked drainage.

Where do flat roofs usually leak?

At seams, edges and penetrations like vents, drains and where the flat section meets a wall or a sloped roof.
